Burning up the internet right now is talk of a Pat Herrity vs. Keith Fimian primary, or at least a Herrity run for Congress. Its an interesting development and one that have caught most people offguard. The conventional wisdom is was that Herrity would run for Chairman after a razorthin lose last year.
Keith Fimian ran for Congress literally out of nowhere last year and got 43% of the vote in the worst year for Virginia Republicans maybe in history. We were routed in every way, shape, or form from Barack Obama winning the state to Albert Pollard winning a delegate race. I respect and hold in high regard the fact that Keith ran when so many others, including the incumbent, refused to take on this challenge.
This is in no means an attempt to slight Pat Herrity, what he has done for Republicans or what he will do in the future. But its clear that the lines are drawn between the new school of conservatives and Republicans in Virginia who have come out in waves to support Fimian early on. Most importantly, today it was announced that new Dels. Rich Anderson and Jim LeMunyon have signed on to support Fimian.
From my perspective, its not as much conservative versus RINO in this decision but past versus future. The people surrounding Herrity are much of the same people that got us into this mess. His county work has been amazing but I worried that a lot of the old Davis staffers, hands, and consultants who took this party through the disastrous 2000s will surround him. They are desperate to get back to Congress. These are the people who tell us we shouldn talk about any social issues, that we need to "moderate" ourselves, we need to triangulate our issue to get centrist and Democrats. Conservatives are behind Fimian as clear by the endorsements from Corey Stewart, Bob Marshall, and LeMunyon. There is finally a group of conservatives and Republicans who have gotten elected in the postDavis era where they don owe the former congressman anything, and I get the sense they are backing Fimian.
The lessons of 2009 are the principles matter, moderating doesn work. McDonnell, Bolling, and Cuccinelli all took the every day issues facing voters head on and gave the voters realworld, working conservative solutions and won overwhelmingly. They did not run away from anything, they took their arguments to moderates and Democrats and convinced them that we were right rather than trying to find an endaround issue to get their votes in spite of ourselves. Fimian in every event I seen him at since last year is following the lead of the 2009 ticket and is aggressively challenging Gerry Connolly on issues that voters care about health care, government expansion, taxes, and the creeping socialism of an overreaching government into every aspect of our lives. The man fights, and I choose to fight with him.
This is not about Pat Herrity, whom I respect deeply and would gladly support if he were the nominee. But I feel that Fimian is tapping into real conservative solutions facing this country and that he has the experience and correct background to talk about job creation, taxes, and health care unlike most other candidates. The comments on other blog posts are full of anonymous comments from the the radical moderates that fill much of the party infrastructure in this area who are no doubt hostile to Fimian and his embrace of tea party activist conservatism. No doubt some will show up here to take down Fimian, and that is fine. But it is this humble blogger opinion that Keith Fimian is the conservative candidate, the candidate with true solutions to the problems facing this country, and with the best personal experience to understand the issues facing us. He run a business, created jobs, offered health care, and been in touch with the real voters out there for the last 12 months. He been outspoken in his criticism of the abominable health care debacle, the out of control spending, everything that is wrong in Washington.
I stand with Keith Fimian.
its not paranoid hatred bro, its simple concern that the same people who got us in the mess that was the 2000s will be supporting Herrity because they aren supporting Fimian. These are the people who advised Jeannemarie to run as a Democrat (basically), who ran the McCain Campaign in Virginia, who told us not to run delegate candidates in 2007, who told us the Transportation compromise would work, and who told us to not talk about our social views.
I don hate anybody, but one thing I learned from my activism over the last four years is when you have strong principles and can articulate them and relate them to average people problems, winning takes care of itself.
This isn irrational hatred, its a real concern that the wolves who ruined this party are trying to creep their way back in.
Funnily enough, Bob McDonnell didn talk about abortion when he won as Governor. He never backed away from being solidly prolife, but that wasn the focus of his campaign.
Not only does Pat Herrity have strong principles that he can articulate, but he put them into action on his time on the Board of Supervisors, and has become the new leader of the Republican Party in Fairfax County because of that and his run for Chairman. It one of the reasons why Herrity was named Bob McDonnell CoChairman in Fairfax during the campaign.
You wouldn catch Pat running as a Democrat, or not supporting candidates to run for local office, so why do you have this kneejerk distrust towards anybody who doesn seek out the furthest right elements of the party?
Okay, in 2007 I was not ten feet away at a YR meeting when Jeannemarie and Tom were lecturing us about how we should not talk about abortion, that we need to find issues that will win over Democrats.
And your wrong about McDonnell and team, none of them ran away from being prolife.
None of this is about Pat for me. He a great Republican, nothing wrong with him. But if he runs against Fimian, I backing Fimian because he speaking the language of the new conservatism that is winning over this country.
And like I said, its not about the "furthest right" elements of our party. Far from it. But every time we slid to the center we lost in Virginia. Every time.
The people that ran this county for most of the 2000s, from Davis on down, put us in the position we were in. It was a topdown hierarchy where the activists where dictated too by people who "know better" rather than brought in as equals. There was a fault line between those running the campaign and those out there doing the grunt work. It created a total detachment from the operation and the grassroots. Now I know you were in the operation VABlogger, so I can understand how you might yearn for the old days. But I was out there pounding the pavement on cold fall days for no money, and it was demoralizing to feel like what you did didn matter. When I would go volunteer for Ken, it was different. You felt like you were really doing something important. I never want this party to go back to the days when we were dictated too rather than having a say in the conversation.
I don think Pat Herrity is like that, but the people that are slowly leaching themselves onto him are.
I vote for Anybody But Connolly, but don see any advantages to Keith Fimian. I vote for him, if he the candidate. But I wonder why we couldn do better when he inevitably loses to Gerry Connolly.
As far as the abortion issue, I prolife. I know Bob McDonnell and several other Republican candidates are prolife. Being prolife does not damn a candidate, even in Northern Virginia. Keith Fimian tried his darnedest not to bring the prolife issue up at all, which frankly irked me a bit. I guess he tried that bit of alleged Tom Davis advice at first? The Democrats brought it up for him in their overthetop glossy DCCC flyers wherein they branded him as an extremist in most entertaining and probably untrue fashion. Even though I voted for Fimian, I was holding my nose a bit that this was the best we had to go up against Connolly. It was like sending a ninety pound weakling up against the schoolyard bully.
Still, like I said: I vote ABC. That the one advantage I see to Keith Fimian. He not Gerry Connolly.
One selfish argument for Pat Herrity staying where he is in Fairfax, though: he a safe bet for reelection in his district, he done a great job on the BOS, and frankly, if he stays there, he in a position to do more good (and less harm) for (and to) me, as a citizen of Fairfax County. The current BOS is a decently balanced one (aside: I like some more Republicans on it, but far prefer John Foust to Joan Dubois and didn cry over her defeat) that is not dominated by any one strongwilled individual, which means they been forced to deal with each other. Even though Sharon Bulova is the Chairman in name, Pat Herrity is the guy everybody knows.
