Van Nistelrooy puts United in overdrive
Ferguson has relegated David Beckham to the stand for disciplinary reasons in the past, but his famous No 7 has rarely had much trouble breaking into the Manchester United team on form alone. When he broke his ribs more than a month ago, it would have seemed improbable that the England captain would have to wait for a slump in Phil Neville's form before he regains a place in the United midfield.
The team who beat Arsenal on Saturday had crept in behind Deportivo's defensive line of five players within minutes. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, deployed on the right of midfield, gathered the ball on the edge of the area and laid it off for Van Nistelrooy to drag a shot wide. In the quarterfinals last year it took United 23 minutes to open the scoring against the Spanish side this time they waited only seven minutes.
In April, with Ryan Giggs in devastating form, a 32 defeat flattered a Deportivo side turned inside out by United's winger. They appeared lost again when Paul Scholes's cross from the right found Van Nistelrooy hanging in the air longer than any defender to head home United's first. Forget the UEFA statisticians who discount his goals in the Champions League qualifiers, that was the Dutch striker's 19th United goal in Europe in just 23 games.
Watching from the other end, Van Nistelrooy's countryman, Roy Makaay, would have settled for just one promising cross. Deportivo's coach, Javier Irureta, started with Diego Tristan on the bench, which left Makaay to forage alone. He was up against Wes Brown, whose memories of Deportivo at Old Trafford last October will be the muddle he and Fabien Barthez found themselves in. This time round the England international looked remarkably assured.
United's best move of the half started with Barthez when, after 21 minutes, the French goalkeeper rolled a ball out to Juan Sebastian Veron, who found Van Nistelrooy in the centre. The Dutch striker fed John O'Shea on the left and when Giggs collected the ball to feed Scholes in the centre the midfielder ruined a virtuoso move by shooting wide.
Nothing, however, quite matched the cross that Veron placed on Van Nistelrooy's forehead minutes later. The Argentine has spoken candidly about his 16 months at United this week and the catharsis appears to have transformed him. Just before the halfhour, billige nike free, on the left of the area, he stepped over the ball with his left foot and chipped a cross with his right that found the Dutch striker perfectly. His goal was disallowed for a push on goalkeeper Juanmi.
Veron was United's busiest figure in midfield, chopping over Jose Emilio Amavisca to earn a booking that means he misses Juventus's visit in February. His pause to stop and deliver a telling word in the ear of the prostrate Amavisca suggested there is more of Roy Keane in the Argentine than might have been thought.
Ferguson only emerged from his dugout to prowl the training area with 10 minutes of the second half played, but by then his team had taken a razor to the Deportivo defence twice in the kind of raids that compared with any of the United manager's sides' European performances. Firstly, after 53 minutes, there was Giggs drifting in from the left with a few measured steps before bursting into pace across the face of the Deportivo box.
He had beaten four defenders before he decided that there was enough room for a shot that was struck, uncharacteristically, with his right foot. The ball skipped back off the post into the path of Van Nistelrooy, who was halfway into his celebrations when he realised he had been ruled offside.
Cut to the home end seconds later where Makaay, paired with the substitute Tristan, was set free on goal and the flag stayed down. Barthez, narrowing the angle on the left of his area, kept the shot out and when the followup bounced wide the home side swept up the field again. This time it was Scholes's shot that was palmed away by Juanmi but rescued by Solskjaer. Before the Norwegian could gather the ball into his stride, Van Nistelrooy swept home his 20th European goal for United.
Even Gary Neville was set free on goal moments later but lost his bearings as he entered the Deportivo area. When he did finally emerge from the dugout to pass on a few instructions, Ferguson must have wondered at the transformation of a team labouring so badly just a month ago.
Giggs, who ended the game at leftback, ran half the length of Old Trafford to feed Van Nistelrooy after 80 minutes. He had an appeal for a penalty denied when he threaded between two defenders.
